2025
This mural at Western Washington University in Bellingham celebrates Latine diversity, resilience, and community. With symbols like the puma, quetzal, jaguar, butterfly, and sun, it honors strength, nature, and our roots. The butterfly also pays tribute to Phyllis Gutiérrez Kenney, a pioneer for Latine rights in Washington State.
Mountains, rivers, and ancestral pyramids connect us to our heritage, while the central figures radiate joy, unity, and hope. The mural’s title “The people united will never be defeated” is a powerful call for solidarity and collective action.
Special thanks to WWU and to Phyllis Gutiérrez Kenney’s family, whose donation to La Plaza made this mural possible!
